2026-27 Divisions & Postseason Qualification

In 2021, the Minnesota NPL brought incredible change and opportunity for clubs and families across Minnesota, raising the level of competition, expanding pathways, and connecting players to a national platform with an incredible postseason experience.

Fast forward to 2026, and that same spirit of growth is carrying us into the next chapter.

Effective in 2026-27: the Minnesota NPL will transition to the National 1 League. The National 1 League brings together two established league platforms - US Club Soccer's National Premier Leagues and US Youth Soccer's National League.

TCSL will operate National 1 Central District #1, representing clubs across Minnesota and Western Wisconsin. The core principles, values, and competitive structure that defined the Minnesota NPL will remain in place.

The National 1 Competition is the result of bringing together US Club Soccer’s National Premier Leagues and US Youth Soccer’s National League, beginning with the 2026-27 season. The new league ushers in an era of collaboration in youth soccer that benefits more than 10,000 teams and 150,000 players.

TCSL clubs who have enjoyed the Minnesota NPL’s structure will continue to enjoy this same structure under the National 1 brand.

The National 1 League structure (refer to the league structure below) will reflect, for the most part, the structure of the current NPL.

National 1 will introduce several benefits across the youth soccer landscape, including:

  • Greater consolidation and collaboration within American youth soccer, bringing increased clarity for players, parents, and clubs.
  • A carefully structured system of conferences and districts designed to reduce overall travel and costs—an approach already demonstrated within TCSL.
  • Expanded postseason opportunities that are drivable, culminating in the ECNL Conference League Playoffs.

Otherwise, very little will change operationally.

  • The principles of the current Minnesota NPL will remain.
  • Standards, league administration, and competition management will remain consistent.
  • The existing TCSL pyramid and promotion pathways remain intact.
  • The primary changes occur at the national level, particularly within postseason structure, branding, governance, and standards for clubs and league operators alike.

Developed in collaboration with club directors, the National 1 League structure will reflect the established Minnesota NPL framework, with a continued focus on providing a robust, club-centric annual schedule. 

In general, teams play one meaningful season throughout the full soccer year.

The benefit to this structure is utmost flexibility for clubs, and appropriate training to match ratios which are in the best interest of player development.

Club and team qualification into National 1 League is based on on-the-field performance in the previous soccer year. Similarly, the existing TCSL Pyramid remains in tact, with National 1 promoting into the ECNL Regional League – Twin Cities.

Qualification pathways are reflected in the TCSL Rules Handbook. Pathways may be modified from time to time at the discretion of the TCSL League Office.

National 1 league winners will advance to the ECNL Conference League Playoffs, which will feature top National 1 teams and select ECNL Regional League teams. The top two (2) teams from each U13-U19 division will advance.
